Welcome to my first indie pattern in support of DesigningVashti Lotus yarn. When Vashti Braha and I developed Lotus, we imbued it with all the attributes and qualities we wanted in a yarn for crochet. We couldn’t help but love it. Now we had to find ways to spread the love.

Lotus Bolero is my choice for introducing you to the wonders of this yarn. Requiring from one to three big skeins, it is a short, sweet sleeveless vest that works up quickly. It’s lightweight, adaptable, attractive, packable, squish-proof; a layer you’ll reach for all year round.  — Doris Chan

Skill Level

Intermediate. Because this is a lace stitch pattern and requires simultaneous stitch shaping, the instructions are automatically rated Intermediate. However, the stitches themselves are not difficult and the shaping not that complex; anyone with solid basic crochet skills can do this.

As long as you can “read” and keep track of your crochet (understand the parts of your stitches, identify and count stitch combinations and row ends) and are comfortable with written pattern instructions, then you’re good to go.

Sizes

Lotus Bolero is available in ten sizes. There is a complete reference chart in the pattern for seeing all sizing details in one place.

For a more relaxed fit or to more completely overlap at the front, choose a larger size. These sizes are meant to be close-fitting for these actual body bust measurements: Girl sizes S(6)/24” [M(8-10)/26”, L(12-14)/28-30”]; Adult sizes XS/32” [S/34”, M/36-38”, L/40-42”, XL/44-46”, 2X/48-50”, 3XL/52-54”]

Materials

Yarn: Designing Vashti Lotus: 52% cotton, 48% rayon; approximately 3.5 oz (100g)/256 yd (235m) per skein; sportweight.

• One ball of Lotus will make a girl bolero size 24/S (shown in Pearly Pearl) or 26/M (shown in Peachy Sheen).
• Two cakes will make a girl size 29/L (shown in White Blaze), or adult size 32/XS (shown in Satin Grey) or 35/S (shown in LaLa Yellow) or 38/M (shown in Bamboo Green).
• With three cakes you can cover the entire rest of the size range, up to 53/3XL!

Crochet Hook: US Size G-7 (4.5 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge; I designed and crocheted all of the bolero samples and tutorials with a 4.5 mm Tulip Etimo cushion grip hook.
