Description

The soft pleats of this Tunisian Knit Stitch fabric create plush and stretchy insulation. It’s a quick, one-skein crochet pattern written for two yarn weights: a light-to-regular worsted weight (heavy DK) version (shown in purple) requiring an L/8mm Tunisian hook, and an aran (heavy worsted) weight version (shown in heather grey) requiring an M/9mm Tunisian hook. I completed each one in 1.5 evenings each.

Skill Level Intermediate Tunisian

Some Tunisian stitches are worked into more than one row at a time. It’s recommended that you experience a beginner-level Tunisian crochet pattern before attempting this one. The only Tunisian stitch you need to know is the Tunisian Knit Stitch (Tks). Pattern is written with a limited amount of abbreviations. International English equivalents to American measurements, yarn weights, and stitch terms are provided in brackets.

Finished Dimensions

One long edge of the cowl stretches more than the other while worn, but when measured flat, the cowl looks like a simple rectangle with these measurements:

1. Smaller purple cowl: 6″ X 21″ (15 cm X 54 cm)
2. Larger grey cowl: 7″ X 19″ (18 cm X 48 cm)

Supplies Needed for Smaller (Purple) Cowl

• Crochet Hooks: Size L/US11/8mm Tunisian crochet hook or size required for gauge. Minimum length of hook: 7″/18 cm. Size K/US10.5/6.5mm regular crochet hook.
• Yarn: Approximately 185 yards/170 meters of a #3 Light Weight yarn or one that states a gauge of approx. 12-17 stitches over 4 inches with a G/7/4.5mm-I/9/5.5mm hook. Pictured: Naturallycaron.com’s Country (75% microfiber acrylic, 25% merino wool; 185yd/170m per 3oz/85g), color #0014 Deep Purple; most of 1 skein was used.

• Crochet Hooks: Size M/US13/9mm Tunisian crochet hook or size required for gauge. Minimum length of hook: 7″/18 cm. Size L/US11/8mm regular crochet hook.
• Yarn: Approximately 170 yards/156 meters of a #4 Medium Weight yarn or one that states a gauge of approx. 12 stitches over 4 inches with a J/10/6mm hook. Pictured: Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice (100% acrylic; 170yd/156m per 3.5oz/100g), color #151 Charcoal Grey; most of 1 skein was used.
